Writer's parents attacked

The elderly parents of South African writer Riana Scheepers were attacked on their farm outside Vryheid in northern KwaZulu-Natal, Beeld reported on Saturday.

"The land is in a hole of moral decay," Scheepers told the newspaper.

Her parents Attie and Myra Scheepers, both 80, were attacked on their farm Bet-el on Thursday evening.

Attie went outside to pull his bakkie into the garage when he found four armed men waiting for him. Both parents were kicked and beaten with revolvers on the head and in the face.

Their hands were tied together behind their backs with wire while the men robbed them of their cellphones and about R18 000 in wages, the newspaper reported.

The men took the couple to their bedroom, where they switched on an iron and threatened to burn Myra with it. Attie managed to press the panic button with his tongue.

According to the report, the police had arrested two men on Friday in connection with the attack.
