Andrew Chirwa was elected president of the National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) on Tuesday.
Chirwa, the union’s first vice-president, replaces Cedric Gina in the position after the latter resigned last month.
The announcement was made on the first day of Numsa’s special national congress in Boksburg.
Chirwa was the only person nominated for the post.
Second vice-president Christine Olivier replaces Chirwa in his previous position.
Olivier, in turn, was replaced by Basil Cele.
