Pretoria – Former President Nelson Mandela is showing signs of sustained improvement, said the President on Monday. Presidential spokesperson Mac Maharaj said President Jacob Zuma visited the Medi-Clinic Heart Hospital on Madiba’s 44th day of hospitalisation.
The President assured Madiba of the “love and support of all South Africans.” Zuma requested that South Africans continue to keep Mandela in their thoughts and prayers.
Zuma also conveyed a message to Madiba from the family of former ANC President Albert Luthuli. Luthuli’s daughter Albertina wrote in a message to Madiba that she shall forever cherish the moments when Madiba visited the Luthuli family home on the business of the ANC.
“That laid the basis to regard you as my father after the death of my own biological father, Chief Albert Luthuli, and one has to admit that you always acted in the manner that consolidated that acknowledgement. May God Be With You,” she wrote.
The Nobel Laureate turned 95 last week. He celebrated his birthday in hospital where he is being treated for a recurring lung infection.
Mandela’s grandson Mandla Mandela also told South Africa his grandfather is improving rapidly. In a statement on the weekend Mandla said the former statesman is gaining strength every day.
